The editors at Wine Enthusiast recently rated and reviewed our 2008 Grenache 74 (90 points) and 2009 Grenache Rosé (89 points) for their upcoming October Buying Guide. We won't know if we made the cut for the print buying guide until the issue comes out, but on October 1, you can read the complete reviews on WineMag.com. In the mean time, we invite you to experience the pure pleasure of this rich, unfiltered red, and its cousin, a classic Provencal rosé with an engaging Applegate Valley personality.

Our 2008 Spiral 36 was Northwest Palate's "Pick of the Palate," and Kimberly Paley selected it as The Oregonian's first choice as a fine pour for picnics in its 2010 Spring Wine Guide. This palate-pleasing blend of Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier quickly became a glass pour at restaurants throughout Oregon from Ashland to Portland and Bend to the Bandon. We just released our 2009 Spiral 36 with an even smaller production than last year, which sold out quickly. Spiral fans are already reporting that this co-fermented blend is even better.

Cowhorn’s 2009 Rosé offers classic Provençal qualities (Grenache grapes, salmon color, strawberry flavors and low alcohol) with an engaging local personality. The strawberries marry with red delicious apples and pink grapefruit, and there are hints of papaya and guava from a splash of Cowhorn’s luscious Viognier. In the mouth you get the full Rosé ride: first it’s fruity, then it’s fleshy, and finally it’s refreshingly tangy. Your taste buds will welcome this Rosé with almost any spring or summer meal.

13700newvines

As part of a master plan developed nearly a decade ago with holistic estate advisor Alan York, over half of COWHORN's 117-acre estate is reserved for gardens, habitat, forest and riparian areas with just 50 acres set aside for vineyards. To keep up with popular demand for our perinnially sold-out whites, we have added an acre each of, Marsanne and Roussanne, and three more acres of Viognier. In total, 13,700 new grapevines are now in the ground. Following the expansion only 21 acres are in cultivation, including 17 in vineyard and 4 in gardens, primarily asparagus.

On Tour

Wine Spectator reports that we went on tour with Pink Martini. Who knew? Here's what Timothy Nishimoto, also a wine bar owner, had to say about our Viognier. "COWHORN is in southern Oregon, in the Rogue Valley, where the climate is totally different than in the North Willamette Valley. It's often desertlike and arid. Cowhorn makes my favorite whites—all biodynamically grown grapes—from down there, and this Viognier is just delicious. Rich, round with honeysuckle and delicate quince flavors, and a surprising acidity."

Here's a taste of what Northwest Palate had to say about Spiral 36. "...a delightfully complex wine, with clean pear, apricot, and apple fruit components surrounded by distinctive minerality and herbal notes. It is bright and fresh, with taut acidity and an almost electric character that evolves remarkably in the glass. A touch of new oak and plenty of fruit flavors make for an integrated and deliciously balanced wine."

Good news for COWHORN lovers in Portland...if you hit them on the right night, you’re likely to find us on the wine list the Davis Street Tavern. Here's what Williamette Week had to say about them.

"Diners and drinkers have flocked to this window-wrapped Old Town bistro since it opened last year, and both menu and space are split between formal fine dining and top-tier pub offerings. Particularly on Friday and Saturday nights, when the restaurant’s “Tavern” front half stays open until 1 am, a convivial atmosphere fairly spills out the door; one gets the sense everyone is laughing and leaning in to clink glasses or swipe a bite from someone else’s plate."
