Introducing U-Pick Farm Days! Wine Club Members, we are excited to invite you and your guests to Cowhorn for a behind-the-scenes look at our lives as farmers. Save The Bees!

NA

I'm at the Partners for Sustainable Pollination bee symposium in Sebastopol, CA. I didn't know that there are 250 bee friendly farms across the U.S.  That sounds big, but really it is a small number of farms for such an important activity.

Bees are in sad shape these days. The complex world of pesticides, fungicides, diminishing habitat and diminishing plant varieties have made their survival difficult.

The scientists and doctors on the stage today are taking some difficult questions from the audience. Their work is painstaking, necessary and controversial. In my opinion, they are right on the mark: science and agriculture must work together to provide habitat and knowledge in the new world to save the bees!  More to come once I am back at Cowhorn…

A Midwinter Night's Dream: the seed catalogue

NA

This year my experiments in the kitchen garden will be restricted to early and ultra early seed varieties. Until that elusive greenhouse appears, I continue to start the garden in the cold, harsh climate at Cowhorn. My goal this year is for none of the varieties to ripen during the days from July 15 to August 15!

At Cowhorn, our temperatures change dramatically during that month. I have found few varieties that perform well in the cool nights preceding July 15 as well as during the blistering summer heat. This year, we will be working with seeds from Turtle Tree Seeds, Territorial Seed and Seeds of Change.

We are starting in February with direct sow of winter lettuce into beds that are 45 degrees (fingers are crossed for germination). I hope to finish the year in early November with cold hardy arugula. In between, there will be peas, beans, carrots, chard, herbs, tomatoes, peppers and flowers. Right about now we are finishing up the frozen pasta sauces and herbs from last year so I need to get busy!

Southern Oregon vs. The World

NA

It's Southern Oregon vs. The World every weekend in February at Harry & David Country Village, Medford, OR. Come taste our wines today from 11am to 4pm. We will be doing a blind tasting comparing our new release Viognier to a French Condrieu from the northern Rhone. You be the judge. Can Southern Oregon wine really compete with the rest of the world? We obviously think so...
