New Birdhouses

June 25, 2013

We have several happy new tenants at the vineyard! Some are better housekeepers than others, but overall they work for their keep by eating bugs as part of our natural pest mgmt program. This year we hung birdhouses along the fence on the road by the Syrah and Grenache blocks. We hope to build 15 more birdhouses this winter.

Vineyard Expansion Completed

Sometimes, that doesn’t seem like a very big deal. The trick though is to think of it in terms of plants. In 2005, the first vineyard planting totaled 20,936 plants. It was like have a small city to care for! In 2010, we planted an additional 13,499 plants bringing the total to 34,345. Finally, this expansion added 12,769 plants for a total of 47,204. Now that feels like a big vineyard!

But what does it all mean for the wine? Well, when all of these vines are producing, around 2016, we will make about 3,000 cases of wine a year – still a small, boutique winery, but big enough to provide our wonderful club with some of all the wines we make. So please, if you haven’t done so recently, come to Cowhorn, taste and experience! We would love to show you the new vines, pour the new wines, and enjoy the summer sunshine!
